Livestock market information is an integral part of systems used to improve the marketing situation and helps tracking changes in terms of trade particularly with regards to favourable trade.
KLMC in partnership with LINKS and MoLFD have undertaken livestock marketing information which provides regular livestock prices and volume information in most of the major markets in Kenya. The system provides near real time market information which is available on request via short message text (SMS), email and on the internet.
The system is a mechanism through which collection, analysis and dissemination of information needed to help livestock producers, traders’ middlemen are enabled to make decision on when and where to sell their stock. The raw data is generated through market monitors on weekly basis and transmitted to a server in ILRI (LINKS).
Currently the system covers 22 livestock markets spread all over the country and since the system started there has been some improvement on livestock prices, and reduced over supply of livestock to terminal markets. However, there are setbacks in the system because of the livestock producers and traders are not able to read or request for the text due to the illiteracy level and KLMC plans to improve the system by displaying on bill boards and broadcasting it on vernacular languages to simplify the system and make more useful to the large beneficiaries.
